NŠA: in small municipalities, almost 15% of eighth-graders did not reach the threshold level in math at the NMPP

During a recent meeting of the Seimas’ Education and Science Committee, the head of the agency, Simonas Šabanovas, presented findings regarding the performance of eighth-grade students on the mathematics test. Šabanovas noted that the results indicated stronger academic performance within larger municipalities and urban centers. He observed that these areas demonstrated a higher proportion of high-achieving students, alongside a greater number of students performing at the basic academic level.

However, the data highlighted a disparity across different types of municipalities. Šabanovas expressed concern over the elevated percentage of students who failed to meet the established threshold level in smaller municipalities. According to the NŠA report, the rates of students not reaching the required level varied significantly by location.

Specifically, 14.8% of eighth-graders in small municipalities did not attain the required standard. The data further showed that ring-shaped municipalities reported a failure rate of 10.5%, while large municipalities registered 12.8% of students below the threshold. In contrast, the performance in cities was significantly higher, with only 5.8% of students falling below the required level.

These figures underscore a notable variation in academic outcomes among students residing in different types of municipalities, pointing to potential regional differences in educational attainment levels.
