In the Varėna district – sudden firefighter’s death: body found near the firefighting vehicle

A firefighter belonging to the PGT Varėna district municipality was found deceased on Sunday. Authorities reported that the incident occurred after the firefighter, identified as Rimas Čiuryla, was performing his duties on a section of the Vydeniai-Dubičiai-Rakai road. On that day, the firefighter was assigned to the Varėna district municipality’s fire protection service to clear fallen trees from the roadway.

After completing the debris removal and securing his equipment, the fatal incident took place at a car repair shop located in Vilnius. According to reports, a vehicle being serviced in the shop was moved, resulting in it crushing the firefighter, who was kneeling near the firefighting vehicle. Bystanders who witnessed the event immediately alerted medical personnel.

Emergency medics arrived at the scene and initiated resuscitation efforts, which lasted for fifty minutes. Despite the intensive medical intervention, the firefighter could not be revived. The discovery of the body was reported at approximately 18:22:22.

The incident underscores the hazards faced by emergency personnel while responding to calls related to maintaining public roadways. The investigation into the precise circumstances surrounding the accident involving the vehicle repair shop is ongoing.
