Lifeguards at the Klaipėda beaches issued a warning on Monday, June 29, regarding the conditions of the sea. Despite the waves appearing small and seemingly safe, lifeguards cautioned that the water presents treacherous conditions due to the formation of strong backflows. These currents were noted as potentially dangerous, even for strong swimmers.
The warning was underscored by an incident that occurred that evening, suggesting that the advisory was based on real hazards rather than mere precaution. Around 7:07 p.m., Klaipėda firefighters responded to the Central beach, situated between II Melnragė and Giruliai. The emergency call reported a man drowning in the Baltic Sea, prompting a rescue operation.
Upon reaching the scene and assessing the situation, rescue personnel observed that the individual in distress had already reached the shore before the firefighters arrived. Authorities reiterated that despite warming weather, swimmers should refrain from entering the water carelessly. For this year’s operations, the rescue teams will be implementing a revised plan.
The incident serves as a reminder that the sea can remain dangerous, even when conditions appear benign, necessitating adherence to safety guidelines.
