Lithuania is learning from the Poles – some residents are considering exempting from one tax

A proposed tax exemption for permanent residents of the country has been subject to legislative review. If adopted, the measure would exempt a portion of an individual’s salary, specifically up to the equivalent of one Average Monthly Wage (AMW). The legislation underwent a vote in the Seimas, where 73 deputies voted in favor, 3 voted against, and 6 abstained.

Following the vote, the Seimas unanimously agreed to consider the President’s proposal during the autumn session and requested the Government’s formal opinion on the matter. The core provision of the exemption targets permanent residents who have the responsibility of raising at least one child, or who have been doing so for a period exceeding one year. Under the proposed structure, the exemption would apply to a sum covering up to 12 AMW (with the current AMW exceeding 2,312 euros).

The benefit would be available for a duration of up to five years, and the affected citizen would retain the discretion to determine when to apply the exemption. The proposal aims to adjust the tax liability for families with dependent children. The initial exemption amount would cover a portion of the salary not exceeding one AMW, while the total potential relief extends to a higher threshold.

The legislative process indicates that the final details and implementation will depend on the government’s subsequent review and confirmation.
