After the heat wave that scorched Europe – tragic news

According to the Instituto Carlos III de Salud, at least 1,028 fatalities were attributed to heat-related problems. This figure represents a significant increase when compared to the 407 heat-related deaths recorded in June 2025, which the national weather agency Aemet noted was the hottest month on record for Spain. Furthermore, Aemet reported on Wednesday that the first six months of 2026 constituted the hottest period since records began.

During this timeframe, the average temperature across Spain was 1.6 degrees Celsius above normal, marking the seventh record for the hottest first six months over the past decade. The region experienced prolonged extreme weather, as a significant heat wave gripped Europe starting in late June. This intense heat persisted for several months, leading to scorching conditions.

While the initial focus was on the extreme heat, forecasts indicate a gradual shift in weather patterns. For June 2026, refreshing rain is anticipated in some areas, with average temperatures expected to be 3.2 degrees above normal, accompanied by gusts of wind in certain locations. The data highlights the severe impact of sustained high temperatures.

The cumulative effect of this sustained heat across the first half of the year has led to substantial health concerns, as evidenced by the elevated numbers of deaths directly related to the extreme heat events.
