International Cyber Threat Report: AI and vulnerable internet systems change the nature of cyber attacks

Cybersecurity threats are escalating in complexity, speed, and subtlety. According to Antanas Aleknavičius, Director of the NKSC, modern cyber attacks are becoming increasingly difficult to detect and defend against. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) is a key factor driving this escalation, providing malicious actors with enhanced capabilities.

AI facilitates the efficient gathering of intelligence on specific targets, the generation of highly convincing phishing emails across multiple languages, and the rapid identification and exploitation of existing security vulnerabilities. This technological advancement empowers both criminal organizations and state-sponsored groups to execute larger-scale and more sophisticated attacks. A recent report highlights that generative AI is already a routine tool utilized by cybercriminals.

Its applications range from crafting sophisticated phishing lures to analyzing potential targets and accelerating the process of exploiting weaknesses. This increased capability allows these actors to expand their operational scope and increase the frequency of their malicious activities. Consequently, the Director emphasizes that organizations must adopt a posture of continuous improvement, constantly strengthening their overall cyber resilience to mitigate these evolving risks.
