Tragedy in Thailand: 11-year-old boy got into procession by boat, nine monks died

During a pilgrimage in the Mukdahan province in the northeast, a group comprising 35 monks and five laypersons was involved in a serious traffic accident. According to one monk, the incident occurred while the group was traveling when a pickup truck approached. The monk recounted that he was chanting a meditation mantra at the time.

He stated that the truck suddenly arrived at full speed, impacting the group. “The truck suddenly came at full speed and smashed into us,” the monk reported. He added that he and another monk were able to jump off the road just in time.

Initial reports indicated that nine monks survived the collision, although several others were reportedly thrown into the air. Local police subsequently confirmed that five monks had died at the scene, while three others required hospitalization. Later, the Mukdahan provincial office issued an update confirming the death of a ninth monk.

The incident highlighted the danger faced by the monks during their journey. The details provided by the surviving participants described the sudden and forceful impact from the vehicle driven by a young boy. The authorities are investigating the circumstances leading to the high-speed collision involving the monks and the accompanying group.
