M. Sinkevičius: further increase in defense funding, I think, too ambitious

During an appearance on the 15min news portal on Thursday, M. Sinkevičius commented on the balance required across various national priorities. Regarding certain proposals, he said that the proposed scale appeared overly ambitious in percentage terms.

He emphasized that the concept of national security is not mutually exclusive from social policy, noting that robust social protection inherently contributes to the overall security of the populace. He further stressed the critical importance of social security components alongside national defense. Sinkevičius said that maintaining the capability of the army and ensuring the defense of the homeland are equally vital considerations.

Therefore, he stated that the government must successfully navigate finding a balance among these competing yet essential areas. While the designated Prime Minister indicated support for increased funding for defense efforts, he also acknowledged the existence of other significant commitments and existing budgetary challenges. His comments underscored the complex task of allocating resources to meet both immediate social needs and long-term military readiness, positioning the search for equilibrium as a primary policy focus.
