EU milk buying prices continue to decrease

Recent data from the European Commission’s Dairy Market Monitoring Centre indicates significant shifts in the dairy commodity market. For the period spanning January through May of this year, the average purchase price for milk reached 43.5 cents per kilogram. This represents a notable decline, marking an 18.5% decrease compared to the same period last year, and falling 5.4% below the five-year average for that timeframe.

Furthermore, the average price of raw milk across the EU showed a downward trend in May. At a recent auction, several key components experienced notable fluctuations. The cheese price index saw the most substantial drop, declining by 12.3%.

Other commodities also saw downward pressure, with skimmed milk powder falling by 7%, butter by 5%, another listing of skimmed milk powder decreasing by 4.4%, and lactose dropping by 3.9%. Conversely, certain products increased in value. Mozzarella cheese saw a rise of 3.8%, while pasteurized milk powder increased by 8.2%.

These varied movements reflect the current market dynamics affecting dairy producers and processors. The overall reporting suggests continued downward pressure on raw milk costs while specialized powder products and certain cheeses are experiencing price increases.
