The typhoon that swept Taiwan reached China: 2 million people evacuated

A powerful typhoon system impacted East Asia, first striking northern Taiwan before moving into the southern and central regions of China. The extreme weather generated significant damage across the affected areas, leading to widespread power outages and uprooted trees in Taiwan. The impact continued into China, where the severe weather has resulted in substantial damage.

Reports confirm that the storms have claimed at least 39 lives, caused numerous rivers to flood, and led to the rupture of a dam in one reservoir. According to data from the provincial meteorological observatory, Typhoon “Bavi” made landfall in Jinzhou province on Saturday at 23:20. Initial reports from the Xinhua state news agency indicated that the typhoon was associated with severe weather, including images of a powerful tornado.

The storm initially made landfall in the city of Juhuan, bringing sustained winds reaching speeds of up to 144 kilometers per hour. The passage of the typhoon across the region underscores the intensity of the weather event. While the initial devastation was noted in Taiwan, the subsequent progression of the system brought destructive forces into China.

Authorities are continuing to assess the full extent of the damage across the affected provinces as recovery efforts commence following the passage of the typhoon.
