A recent survey highlighted several hazardous interactions between vehicle operators and scooter riders, identifying specific scenarios that significantly increase risk during driving. According to the findings, a majority of drivers, 53%, reported having to brake suddenly due to a scooter rider entering a crosswalk unexpectedly. Furthermore, 39% of respondents stated they had encountered situations where the scooter rider suddenly departed from the roadway.
Other dangerous behaviors noted by the survey include the scooter rider operating within the lane space between stationary cars, which was reported by 27% of participants. Safety concerns were also raised regarding visibility and proximity. Specifically, 27% indicated feeling concern when the scooter rider was difficult to see during low-light conditions, and 18% felt unsafe due to the scooter rider driving too closely to their vehicle.
The study concluded that the most perilous driving situations for drivers are those characterized by unpredictability. The survey data suggests that sudden movements by the scooter rider are primary sources of driver insecurity. Specifically, the unexpected entry into crosswalks, sudden departures from the road, and navigating between other vehicles contribute significantly to driver apprehension.
Moreover, poor visibility and maintaining unsafe following distances when driving are identified as key factors contributing to perceived risk when interacting with a scooter.
