According to Alijev, even as a republic within the USSR, Azerbaijan lacked full self-determination. He noted that the nation’s historical consciousness retains memories of both colonial status and the aspiration for independent statehood. Alijev further detailed the economic shifts following the dissolution of the Soviet structure.
He mentioned that during the Soviet era, Azerbaijan was a significant exporter of oil. However, after the USSR’s collapse, the country contended with issues such as electricity shortages and the ongoing necessity of mitigating environmental damage resulting from intensive oil extraction. Furthermore, Alijev addressed the predictions made by some in Russia after 1991.
He recalled that many predicted the swift collapse of the former Union republics, suggesting they lacked the capacity for self-governance. According to his account, these predictions did not materialize as anticipated.
