In Skuodas, a century-old station is disappearing: the owner is there, but there is no clear plan

The Skuodo district municipality has initiated efforts to address vacant and abandoned properties within its jurisdiction, and the former railway station territory has been identified as one such site of concern. While the municipality has listed this state-owned object among problematic areas, local authorities are constrained by regulations that prevent them from implementing a significant increase in land tax on the property. Consequently, the primary municipal requirement remains the proper maintenance of the grounds.

Recently, speculation has circulated regarding the potential demolition of the old railway station structure. However, representatives from LTG Infra have not issued any confirmation regarding such plans at this time. The uncertainty surrounding the site has heightened anxiety among residents of Panevėžys.

Concerns have been voiced that the construction of the Rail Baltica railway line could potentially lead to residential displacement. Regarding the complex itself, it is noted that the entire Skuodo station complex, situated along the Skuodo railway line, is currently unused; nevertheless, the buildings formally remain in an operational status. These ongoing developments mean that while the physical structure exists, its future use remains uncertain.

The municipality’s efforts to manage the site must balance its current legal status with the significant infrastructure changes associated with the new rail corridor, leaving the ultimate fate of the old station complex unresolved for the local community.
