Budrys: Normalizing relations with China will not violate our obligations to international law

A minister speaking to LRT television on Thursday stated that the guiding principle for all actions, both personally and institutionally, must remain the best interests of Lithuania. He emphasized that these interests serve as the fundamental compass for managing diplomacy. According to the minister, the foundation for any policy must be a clear articulation of a Lithuanian interest—a pragmatic goal tied directly to achieving tangible results that bolster both the nation’s security and its economic stability.

However, the address included a strong caveat regarding the boundaries of this pursuit. While emphasizing the drive toward national objectives, the minister stressed that certain principles are absolute and cannot be compromised. He assured the public that the nation will uphold all obligations under international law.

Furthermore, adherence to core values such as sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the respect for human rights and freedoms are non-negotiable tenets. He clarified that the nation’s actions will be guided by what is deemed vital, and this commitment is not subject to deviation. The statement underscored that while the pursuit of national benefit is paramount, it must operate within a defined framework of international legal and ethical standards.

The minister concluded by expressing a degree of optimism regarding the path forward for the country.
