Two reports concerning possible cases of child sexual abuse were received within the Lithuanian dioceses over the past year. Both instances prompted the initiation of canonical investigations. Regarding these proceedings, one specific case concluded with a guilty verdict under canon law, resulting in the cleric’s deprivation of his priestly duties.
It is noted, however, that under the framework of Lithuanian criminal law, this particular case was not legally qualified as a crime. As of the end of 2025, the dioceses were actively investigating a total of five possible cases involving child sexual abuse. The current caseload reflects activity from both the preceding year and earlier periods.
Specifically, two investigations were launched last year, while three others were initiated in previous years. This aggregate figure of five possible cases encompasses a range of statuses. The investigations include formal canonical inquiries as well as matters where the findings from civil authorities are still pending.
The reporting underscores the ongoing nature of the review process, differentiating between ecclesiastical findings and the determinations of civil law. The continuation of these investigations aims to address all reported allegations while adhering to the distinct legal processes of both canon law and state criminal law.
