The highly contagious disease that is spreading in Europe – and in Lithuania: the second outbreak has been detected

The birdkeeper at the VMVT facility reported that the hens exhibited signs of lethargy and subsequent mortality beginning in early July. Following the observations, inspectors from the VMVT collected biological samples for laboratory analysis. On July 15, testing confirmed the presence of Newcastle disease at the premises.

Authorities stressed that Newcastle disease remains a significant threat to the entire poultry sector within Lithuania. Consequently, the most critical measures for controlling the disease involve maintaining rigorous vaccination schedules and strict adherence to biosecurity protocols across all farms. Although local authorities have indicated that no additional restrictions will be imposed on neighboring poultry operations, experts advise that every poultry keeper must proactively assess their specific risk level.

This heightened vigilance is necessary given the increasing incidence of disease outbreaks across the broader European region. Furthermore, the report emphasized the crucial importance of immediate reporting. Any observed signs or symptoms indicative of the disease must be reported without delay, as prompt response is essential to effectively preventing the wider spread of the virus to other agricultural sites.
