Employers don’t let you off one mistake: after the second call, you may not get another chance

The preference for temporary employment is rising as individuals seek avenues to gain initial professional experience, supplement their income, or explore alternative career fields. This trend is particularly noticeable among young workers across Europe, suggesting that temporary assignments are becoming a more conventional starting point for professional careers. Consequently, the pool of individuals securing first opportunities within the temporary work market is highly diverse.

However, the focus for employers tends to shift rapidly from the applicant’s stated goals to their actual performance on the job. According to Agnė Petrėnaitė, a product manager at Workis, the initial call for a shift does not guarantee long-term suitability. She notes that the first assignment functions as a mutual assessment process.

“The first shift often becomes a mutual check-up,” Petrėnaitė explains. “The employee assesses whether they are suited to the work pace, tasks, and team, and the employer gauges how the person engages in the new job.” This dynamic suggests that the initial period serves as a crucial vetting stage. After this initial period, performance metrics become the primary determinant of continued engagement.

Therefore, while temporary roles offer immediate access to diverse opportunities, sustained professional interest from employers hinges on demonstrated capability and integration within the workplace.
