On Friday afternoon, personnel from the VSAT Varėna Border Guard Detachment observed an individual operating a motorcycle on a patrol road near Versekėlė village in the Šalčininkai district. The surveillance system recorded that the four wheeled vehicle lacked proper state registration. Furthermore, the operator was observed without wearing a helmet and was wearing inappropriate footwear.
Responding to the violation, border guards proceeded to the site and subsequently stopped the individual in the nearby Ūta village. Upon inspection, it was determined that the motorcyclist was a 47-year-old local resident. However, the individual was found to be without any personal identification documents.
The man stated that his purpose for traveling was recreational, explaining that he was merely exploring his own forest property. He further claimed that he believed his authorization to enter the state border guard zone remained valid. Despite his explanation, the VSAT officers who managed the encounter with the Chalinkai resident expressed suspicion that the individual might have been under the influence of alcohol.
The incident highlighted several breaches of safety and regulatory protocols within the restricted border area, leading to the necessary intervention by border security personnel.
