Inga Rudinskaitė, Chief Data Analyst and Insights Director at Tele2, has addressed a common misconception regarding artificial intelligence capabilities, specifically concerning how AI systems process and retain information. Rudinskaitė points out that a frequent error is assuming that AI functions with memory comparable to human recollection, implying that it permanently stores and retrieves every piece of data encountered. She clarified the technical process behind AI responses, explaining that the system does not possess organic memory.

Instead, during an active conversation, the AI operates by re-reading the entirety of the text exchanged up to that point. This continuous re-reading process, though invisible to the user, is the mechanism that allows the system to appear knowledgeable about past inputs. For instance, when an AI references a detail mentioned ten minutes prior—such as a specific location—it is not drawing upon a long-term memory bank, but rather referencing the data within the current context window.

However, it is crucial to understand that this function is not infallible. Rudinskaitė emphasized that the AI does not always retain what was previously written or discussed. The apparent continuity of memory is therefore a function of immediate contextual processing rather than genuine recollection.

Understanding this distinction is key to interpreting AI interactions accurately, as the system’s ability to recall details, such as where a user indicated they were, is dependent on the immediate parameters of the ongoing conversation history.
