Blepharitis, an inflammation of the eyelid margins, is a chronic inflammatory condition frequently linked to the improper function of the Meibomian glands. These specialized glands located in the eyelids are responsible for secreting a lipid layer that helps stabilize tears on the eye surface, thereby minimizing friction between the eyelid and the eyeball. When the function of these glands is compromised, the eyes can experience increased dryness and irritation.
According to recent information, when the Meibomian glands become blocked, their natural secretions can thicken and become difficult to expel. This blockage compromises the protective lipid layer of the tears, leading to faster tear evaporation. Consequently, the concentration of dissolved salts within the tears rises, a condition known as tear hyperosmolarity.
This elevated salt concentration places significant stress on the cells covering the eye surface. This stress, in turn, activates the eye’s natural inflammatory response regulation systems, specifically mentioning the activation of mitogen-activated protein kinases and the nucleus. Proper function of these eyelid glands is therefore crucial for maintaining the tear film’s stability and preventing excessive dryness and irritation of the eye.
