The Lithuanian Radio and Television Commission (LRTK) has highlighted how artificial intelligence (AI) is fundamentally altering the landscape of disinformation. The commission emphasized that regulating these emerging technologies requires an evaluation of both their potential opportunities and their measurable impact on the information environment. According to LRTK Chairman Mantas Martišius in a recent report, the speed and scale at which information can now be generated are changing rapidly due to AI.
He noted that creating convincing manipulative content, which once required specialized skills, can now often be achieved with minimal prompts to an AI system. Martišius stressed that alongside technological advancements, there must be a corresponding effort to bolster the public’s ability to detect manipulation. The chairman called for measures to ensure the transparent use of artificial intelligence across all platforms.
The LRTK’s guidance suggests a dual focus: first, establishing regulatory frameworks to manage the risks posed by AI-generated content; and second, implementing public education initiatives. This approach aims to equip citizens with the necessary critical skills to navigate the complex and rapidly evolving digital information space.
