What can blood donation show about a person’s health?

According to Daumantas Gutauskas, Director of the National Blood Centre (NKC), while health assessments and comprehensive blood testing are crucial components of the donation process, these procedures should not be viewed as a substitute for routine preventive health checkups. Gutauskas clarified the scope of testing performed during a blood donation. He stated that although the testing can create the appearance that it replaces a regular medical examination, this is inaccurate.

The primary objective of the blood donation program is to provide necessary blood components to patients requiring transfusions, rather than functioning as a diagnostic tool for the donor. Despite this difference in purpose, the safety and well-being of the donors remain a top priority for the NKC. Consequently, the center mandates thorough health assessments for every individual participating in the donation process.

Furthermore, all donated blood undergoes mandatory testing protocols to ensure the highest standards of safety for recipients. In essence, the screening conducted before and during a donation serves to maintain the quality and safety of the blood supply while safeguarding the donor. Gutauskas emphasized that while these measures are vital for public health and the successful operation of the blood bank, they are supplementary to, and not replacements for, comprehensive primary health care and preventative medical screenings.
