Concerns have been raised regarding the implementation of the ongoing reform within the Lithuanian prison system. According to Rasa Tamašunienė, the Ministry confirmed that the structural changes are underway, which include the transfer of personnel from the Security Management Department to the Resocialization Department. However, Tamašunienė stated that despite the Ministry receiving reports suggesting the reform is being implemented under duress, the Lithuanian Prison Service (LPS) has been provided with an opportunity to rectify identified issues following audits.
Adding to the administrative friction, Tamašunienė addressed allegations that the LPS head, Mindaugas Kairys, is disregarding directives issued by the Ministry. She noted that should the current situation not improve, disciplinary action could be initiated against him. In terms of operational oversight, unexpected inspections have revealed nine instances of law violations committed by individuals serving short-term sentences.
Furthermore, data from the first five months of the year indicates that seven Lithuanian residents were found within the prison facility after having consumed alcohol. These reports highlight ongoing challenges in maintaining compliance and proper conduct within the correctional environment as the department navigates the transition phase.
