Nanoplastic particles are undetectable by human senses, as they do not alter the taste of food or appear visible. However, nutrition expert Professor Rimantas Stuoka of the Faculty of Medicine at Vilnius University has issued a warning regarding the gradual accumulation of these incredibly small plastic particles within the human body. According to the professor, even if an individual experiences illness, quantifying the exact degree to which plastic contamination has damaged their health will prove extremely difficult.
Speaking on the “Science in Simple Words” radio show, Professor Stuoka noted that while the scientific community has taken the issue of plastic pollution seriously and is actively seeking solutions, viable replacements for current plastic materials are not yet available. He emphasized the urgent need for a cultural shift in how humanity interacts with plastic products. The expert advised adopting a more cautious approach to materials derived from plastic.
He suggested that items designed for single use should be disposed of immediately after their initial use, preventing the prolonged exposure that allows these particles to degrade and enter the environment unnoticed.
