The new head of the MIA spoke about possible changes, which would affect 80% of the population

During a press conference held on Tuesday, the new head of the MIA outlined the primary strategic directions for the tax authority. He stated that the initial focus is twofold: reducing the shadow economy and narrowing the value-added tax (VAT) tax gap within Lithuania. He emphasized that the most critical area relates directly to tax collection, given that the MIA’s core function, as stipulated by the Tax Administration Act, is to ensure the timely collection of taxes into the state budget.

According to the head, the paramount priority to achieve this collection efficiency is to clarify and strengthen control mechanisms within sectors identified as high risk. He detailed a specific, ongoing plan of action designed to address this vulnerability. This plan involves the annual identification and updating of the three to five largest risk sectors to ensure targeted oversight.

Regarding potential adjustments to tax legislation, the official cautioned against definitive predictions. He clarified that tax policy changes do not operate under predetermined, unchangeable mandates. The emphasis remains on actionable improvements to the tax collection process.

Overall, the new leadership stressed that the first and most crucial directive for the mia is to enhance compliance and secure the revenue stream, making robust control over high-risk areas the central pillar of their immediate strategy for national tax integrity.
