M. Sinkevičius addressed journalists on Tuesday, stating that discussions regarding Lithuania’s approach to an EU matter would continue until the government establishes a clear official position. He indicated that his understanding of the Interior Minister’s stance aligns closely with the President’s view, a stance he characterized as being given very serious consideration—specifically, the option to pay.
The comments followed statements made last week by Interior Minister Martynas Katilius. Katilius indicated that Lithuania should opt to fulfill the full financial solidarity contribution rather than undertaking the resettlement of asylum seekers from other European Union nations. According to Sinkevičius, he intends to advocate for the payment option.
He justified this preference by stating that the required sum of money is not substantial. Furthermore, he acknowledged the current volatile geopolitical environment, noting that societal concerns are heightened. Sinkevičius added that the issue of migration itself is inherently complex and generates significant contradictions.
Despite these challenges, he expressed confidence in the feasibility of the financial commitment. He concluded by confirming his readiness to support the payment, stating, “If we can pay 2 or 2.5 million, we will do it,” thereby reinforcing the governmental inclination toward a monetary contribution over physical relocation efforts.
