The Prime Minister has directed that the teaching of patriotism and civic education for Lithuanian students must exclude works associated with the imperial ideology of the Russian Empire. Furthermore, the head of government has proposed integrating the literary works of Ukrainian classic Taras Shevchenko into the national school curriculum. According to the Prime Minister, this measure is intended to enhance the Lithuanian youth’s comprehension of Ukrainian national identity and the literary texts that have shaped it.
This directive comes amid ongoing discussions regarding the structure of the national education framework. ELTA reports that the updated general education programs adopted in 2022 have faced criticism, not only regarding their practical implementation but also concerning the recommended literary selections. At the time of their adoption, critics argued that the updated list contained a disproportionately high number of Russian authors when compared to previous curricula, pointing out a noticeable absence of Ukrainian literature.
The current proposal represents a significant revision to the literary canon. By explicitly excluding certain works deemed tied to historical imperial narratives, and by specifically advocating for the inclusion of Shevchenko, the government is aiming to recalibrate the educational focus. These changes underscore a governmental effort to adjust the curriculum’s ideological grounding while integrating broader regional cultural perspectives into the foundational education provided to students.
