Space Emergency Service: a two-legged robot with rocket backpacks took off to rescue satellites

SpaceX recently launched the Northrop Grumman Mission Robotic Vehicle (MRV) alongside three associated backpacks. These components are set to maneuver into a geostationary orbit located approximately 30,000 kilometers above Earth. At this altitude, operational satellites maintain a consistent position relative to the Earth’s surface, ensuring uninterrupted communication coverage across a fixed area.

The mission involves complex orbital servicing. Around 2027, a micro-bus-sized device, measuring nine meters in length, is scheduled to attach its hand-sized backpack to an aging communication satellite of similar dimensions. Subsequently, this assembled unit will proceed to service two additional satellites.

Upon launch, the three backpacks separated from the MRV. They utilized xenon gas engines to independently reach the designated orbit, establishing a waiting pattern for the arrival of the main MRV device. Each of the backpacks is designed to provide a specific attachment point or mounting location for the MRV device during its servicing operations.

This coordinated deployment of multiple components aims to extend the operational lifespan of existing orbital assets.
