Feeling tired? The doctor is not in a hurry to recommend vitamins(1)

Evaldas Šivickas, MD, a specialist in Family Medicine at the Health Solutions Center of Antėja, notes that fatigue is a highly prevalent symptom, yet it is inherently nonspecific. While the cause could be as simple as insufficient sleep or prolonged emotional stress, the symptom spectrum is broad. According to a recent statement, fatigue can also signal underlying conditions such as anemia, thyroid dysfunction, metabolic disorders, or various infections.

Dr. Šivickas emphasizes that accurate diagnosis is crucial. He advises that the primary role of the doctor is to identify the root cause of the symptoms, ensuring that treatment targets the underlying issue rather than merely managing the resulting discomfort.

He cautions against the common practice of taking vitamins or dietary supplements preemptively, stating that such measures are not always beneficial. The expert clarifies that simply supplementing “just in case” often fails to resolve the core problem. If the body is deficient in a specific nutrient, additional supplementation usually does not address the fundamental cause of the fatigue feeling.

Furthermore, initiating supplementation before comprehensive testing can potentially mislead diagnostic results, as the subsequent tests may fail to accurately reflect the true source of the symptoms. Therefore, professional medical evaluation remains the necessary first step.
