Patients describe the onset as severe gastrointestinal distress. One affected individual reported experiencing intense diarrhea followed by significant stomach pain, requiring continuous consumption of electrolyte solutions to prevent dehydration, and noting periods where eating was impossible for over 36 hours. The condition, known as cyclosporosis, has seen a dramatic escalation in reported cases across the United States.
Recently, at least 22,000 instances of the disease have been diagnosed. Health officials emphasize that this represents a significantly large outbreak, as historical data typically records only about 100 cases of this specific disease annually. The magnitude of the current surge is considered very unusual for this infection.
