On Wednesday evening, a 61-year-old man from Kaunas found himself on the other side of the state border after an incident while fishing near the international boundary. According to border guard reports, the man’s motorboat became immobilized in the grass. He subsequently lost control of the vessel, which was carried by waves into Russian territory.
Upon reaching the Russian side, Russian border guards detained the Lithuanian fisherman and issued a fine for the unauthorized crossing of the border. Following the incident, Lithuanian border guards coordinated a meeting with their Russian counterparts. Both sides facilitated the return of the fisherman and his boat to Lithuanian jurisdiction.
Officials from the Pagėgių border guard noted that fishing spots near the Lithuanian and Russian border are popular areas for local anglers, citing Vištyčio lake as an example. Separately, another maritime incident occurred on Thursday afternoon on the Kuršių sea, where a yacht capsized. Despite efforts by divers, the missing woman was not recovered.
