The Ukrainians of Žalgiris shone on a symbolic day

On the eve of Ukraine’s Independence Day, a football match was held that served as a display of solidarity with Ukraine. The event was dedicated to supporting the nation, with all proceeds generated from ticket sales earmarked for the purchase of ambulances for Ukraine. The atmosphere preceding the game was marked by national tributes.

The Lithuanian army orchestra performed both the Ukrainian and Lithuanian anthems, followed by a joint parade of the two nations’ flags on the field. Congratulatory messages were extended by the Ukrainian ambassador and football legend Andriy Shevchenko. During the match, the narrative of support continued on the pitch.

The game saw Ukrainian footballers score both goals for Zalgiris. Initially, the Latvian team successfully executed its strategy, preventing the opponents from creating significant scoring opportunities. However, the match dynamic shifted when a promising effort by Mato Vareika was intercepted by Marius Paukštė following a notable build-up play.

The event successfully combined sporting competition with a clear message of international support for Ukraine. The gathering underscored the commitment of the community to assist Ukraine, channeling the energy of the day into tangible aid.
