Another mystery of the mysterious Mars satellite has been solved

Researchers have addressed the unexplained geological features of the asteroid Deimos, focusing particularly on a significant depression located at its south pole. To explain this anomaly, scientists have developed and utilized advanced digital models to simulate the formation of the depression. These models suggest that the unique characteristics observed across Deimos can be attributed to a single, substantial impact event.

The investigation involved estimating the parameters of the hypothetical impactor. According to the research, an object with an estimated diameter of approximately 320 meters struck Deimos at a highly oblique angle. While the impact was deemed “subcatastrophic”—meaning it was insufficient to cause the total destruction of the satellite—it was powerful enough to significantly transform the asteroid’s surface structure.

The quantitative success of the modeling is noteworthy. The simulations were able to reproduce not only the dimensions of the central depression but also the surrounding regolith layer, the distinct bright bands, and the appearance of partially filled craters. This comprehensive matching of observed features with the impact model provides a cohesive explanation for the satellite’s surface geology.

The findings advance our understanding of how such an impact could reshape the surface of Deimos while leaving behind the specific set of features currently under investigation.
