The central focus of this year’s festival program is the emerging Portuguese jazz scene, which is currently achieving international recognition. According to Antanas Gustys, organizer of the Vilnius Jazz event, the celebration will feature performances from leading Portuguese jazz ensembles hailing from both Brazil and Mozambique. The festival is set to commence with performances from notable Portuguese jazz groups, including the work “Oblong Emission” by contrabassist and composer Hugo Carvalhais, alongside the quartet “Garfo.” A key educational component will be a lecture delivered by Pedro Costa.
Costa is a renowned music producer, festival curator, and the founder of the highly influential contemporary jazz publishing house, “Clean Feed Records,” who will discuss the current state and key figures within the Portuguese jazz landscape. Furthermore, on October 14th, the Vilnius Old Theatre is scheduled to host a presentation by H. Carvalhais.
This performance will feature one of the most innovative Portuguese jazz artists of his generation, accompanied by a group of selected improvisers. These elements collectively aim to showcase the depth and breadth of modern Portuguese jazz talent at the festival.
