Dramatic race against time in Kaunas: one person drowned, another was saved

The Kaunas Fire and Rescue Department reported an incident that occurred when a woman alerted authorities that her husband had fallen into the Nemunas River near Paštuvos village. The location was situated within the Kaunas district, specifically in the Batniava district. According to initial reports, the man was caught in strong river currents.

The force of the water reportedly carried the individual a significant distance, estimated at approximately one kilometer downstream. Firefighters responded to the scene and managed to retrieve the body from the river approximately 20 meters from the nearest bank. Emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene to assess the situation.

They confirmed the man’s death after their examination, noting that their arrival occurred over half an hour following the initial distress call. The incident highlights the dangers posed by strong river currents in the region. Rescue services were mobilized to the area to manage the situation.

While the precise circumstances leading to the fall were reported by the woman, the rescue operation was complicated by the powerful flow of the Nemunas. The department confirmed that personnel worked to recover the body despite the challenging conditions presented by the river’s currents in the Kaunas district.
