Pornography for money: DI start-up conducted a controversial study

An AI company named Joi AI conducted an experiment designed to evaluate the potential integration of erotic self-stimulation into what it termed an “AI-assisted wellness ritual.” As part of the study, ten designated “masturbation consultants” participated throughout the month of July. The protocol required the participants to engage with Joi AI’s digital companions twice weekly, excluding Sundays. For the remaining time, the consultants utilized their preferred methods.

One participant, Keshav, a 38-year-old unmarried Indonesian trader who requested anonymity for professional reasons, provided insight into the experience. He noted that the interaction felt comparable to conversing with an actual individual. The platform provided users with the option to communicate with pre-designed characters or to create bespoke digital companions, which could incorporate specific interests, such as fantasies involving blackmail scenarios.

The goal of the research was to gauge user reception and the efficacy of digital companionship tools in this context. The structure of the study allowed researchers to monitor how users were using the AI platform alongside their established routines. The findings are intended to inform the development of future wellness technologies, assessing the boundaries and potential of AI-mediated personal experiences.
