Where does summer energy disappear? The doctor explains what changes come with autumn

A study published in the scientific journal Behavioral Sciences in 2025 investigated the correlation between seasonal changes and physical activity levels among adults. Researchers from Klaipėda University, including Rasa Jankauskienė and Miglė Bacevičienė, surveyed 924 Lithuanian adults to assess how their physical activity in nature varied across the four seasons. The research aimed to quantify the degree to which environmental factors influence engagement in outdoor physical pursuits.

The findings indicated a distinct seasonal pattern in physical activity. Specifically, participants reported engaging in more physical activity during the summer months compared to other times of the year. Conversely, activity levels recorded in the winter were significantly lower.

The study highlights that while leisure activities naturally increase during warmer months—such as walking, swimming, cycling, and other outdoor pursuits—this pattern of increased engagement is measurable. The data suggests a strong link between favorable weather conditions and higher rates of outdoor participation. Beyond seasonal fluctuations, the researchers also touched upon the broader implications for long-term health.

The study noted that maintaining consistent physical activity levels throughout the year, regardless of the season, is crucial for managing related health concerns, including fatigue, joint pain, and overall dietary considerations, such as adopting an anti-inflammatory diet. The overall conclusion emphasizes that while summer provides a natural impetus for increased activity in nature, consistent effort year-round is vital for sustained well-being.
