A deputy minister reported at the Seimas’ Education and Science Committee meeting on Friday that 81% of educational institutions (ELTA) currently possess fast-accessible shelters. The report detailed the distribution of these protective facilities among the institutions. Specifically, 48% of the educational facilities have shelters located on their own premises.
An additional 21% have shelters situated immediately adjacent to the school grounds, while 12% are located within a 150-meter radius. Conversely, the deputy minister noted that 19% of the institutions lack any shelters within a 300-meter range. J.
Petkevičius clarified the methodology used for measuring proximity, explaining that shelters situated between 30 and 150 meters are categorized as being immediately next to the facility, and those between 150 and 300 meters fall under the 300-meter category. Addressing the overall security posture, the deputy minister acknowledged that Lithuania does not possess a significant security advantage when compared to other nations, such as Ukraine. He emphasized that the mere quantity of accessible shelters is insufficient for ensuring comprehensive safety.
Instead, he stressed that the quality and operational readiness of these shelters within the educational institutions are equally critical components of the national preparedness strategy.
