The community is observing the passing of V. Garastas, whose life and contributions are marked by deep connections to the region. Services honoring his memory are scheduled for Saturday, June 13.
The day’s observances begin with a Holy Mass at the Kaunas St. Apostles Peter and Paul Cathedral at 8 a.m. Later that day, the funeral procession will depart for Petrašiūnai cemetery at 1 p.m.
The formal funeral services will commence at 3:30 p.m. at the Recviem funeral home, located at Jonavos g. 41A in Kaunas.
Tributes were paid by numerous figures, including the leaders of the Kaunas “Žalgiris” team and various sports specialists, who represented the coaching and athletic community. Other notable attendees included Visvaldas Matijošaitis, the mayor of Kaunas, alongside basketball chronicler Vidas Mačiulis and former ringo player Jonas Mačiulis. V.
Garastas’s background includes his birth in Linkuva, where he also spent much of his formative years in Biržai. His educational history includes graduating from the Biržų gymnasium in 1952, followed by graduation from the Kaunas St. Apostles Peter and Paul Cathedral in 1953.
