Geologists went in search of gold – but found something much rarer

Initial geological surveys in the Eastern Gold Mines region shifted from routine study to investigating a strange anomaly detected through gravitational data. Further excavation revealed evidence of a massive, ancient catastrophe. The geological record indicates an event powerful enough to melt bedrock, deform crystalline structures, and eject significant amounts of gold-bearing debris high into the atmosphere.

Scientists hypothesize that this event resulted from an impact by an iron-rich meteorite. This strike occurred considerably before the deposition of the early Cretaceous layers that subsequently covered and preserved the site. The resulting impact structure, temporarily named Ora Banda, represents a remarkably preserved scar, although time has largely obscured its original features.

According to the research team, led by University of Puerto Rico geologist Raiza Quintero, the significance of this find extends beyond typical meteorite evidence. While impact craters are relatively uncommon on Earth, the characteristics of the Ora Banda structure make it particularly noteworthy. The presence of these unique geological markers, coupled with the concentration of ancient gold deposits, suggests a profound understanding of regional deep-time history.

The investigation into this anomaly confirms that the area was subject to extreme geological forces. The team is now focused on fully mapping the extent of the impact zone to better understand the mechanics of the collision and the subsequent processes that concentrated the valuable mineral deposits. This discovery provides critical insights into both planetary impact mechanics and the deep history of gold mineralization in the region.
