Officials from the Environmental Protection Department of the Ministry of the Environment recently investigated an incident in the Anykščiai district, near the Šilelis forest. The investigation began last February while personnel were examining a wild animal skin discovered in the area. During their inspection of the forest, the environmentalists made significant finds related to illegal activities.
In addition to the animal remains, the team located two self-made firearms, one chambered for 16th caliber and the other for 12th caliber, which were identified as tools used for poaching. These weapons were found in the vicinity of the lynx trail. Furthermore, the firearms were rigged to ropes strung across the path, designed to activate if the ropes were severed.
Evidence suggested that the weapons had been used recently. One firearm had fired a bullet that struck a tree, and the second was suspected of having shot a nearby lynx, which was subsequently butchered and removed from the area. The environmentalists immediately notified the police regarding this discovery, noting that the presence of such weaponry poses a danger not only to wildlife but also to the public.
Separately, meteorological reports indicated a shift in weather patterns. While rain was anticipated, the volume was expected to decrease, with temperatures predicted to rise to 21 degrees Celsius.
