It proposes a minimally invasive examination of one possible location of Vytautas the Great’s remains

The Lithuanian History Institute has been tasked with developing a comprehensive action plan to guide an upcoming structural inspection. According to a press release issued by the Government Chancellery, this plan must establish detailed methodologies, outline necessary risk management measures, identify required specialized personnel, and detail all necessary harmonization procedures. A critical element emphasized in the directive is that any potential inspection must strictly adhere to the principle of the least possible intervention.

Furthermore, its execution is contingent upon establishing conditions set forth by the Department of Cultural Heritage within the Ministry of Culture. Approval is also mandatory from both the Eparchy of Vilnius’ economic service and the Church’s Cultural Heritage Museum. The guidelines explicitly state that initiating extensive, large-scale invasive studies is currently unfeasible without first acquiring sufficient scientific and heritage data.

The authorities caution that even a very small intervention within such a historically significant object must be treated as a highly sensitive action. Consequently, the initial recommendation is to conduct only an inspection designed to gather additional requisite data. This preparatory step is considered the most prudent course of action before any more substantial work can be deemed possible.

The Institute’s plan will therefore focus on establishing the procedural groundwork required to manage the findings of this preliminary inspection responsibly.
