On Sunday night, border guard officers stationed at the VSAT Gintaro Žagunio border post, located in the Šalčininkai district near the border with Belarus, utilized available anti-drone equipment. The action was prompted after the guards detected a flying object suspected of transporting smuggled cigarettes from Belarus. The drone was successfully affected by the VSAT equipment.
Following the interference, the drone began to spin erratically in the dark as it descended before falling further away from the Gintaro Žagunio border guard post. VSAT officers immediately cordoned off the area and commenced a search operation. During the search, the guards discovered a homemade fixed-wing aircraft in the nearby fields.
The aircraft was found attached to its parachute. It is suspected that the aircraft deployed its batteries after its fuel supply was depleted. The discovery indicates an attempt at illicit crossing near the border.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident involving the contrabandist and the recovered aircraft.
