About the dispute with Ukraine – tension and in Poland: R. Sikorski expressed his opinion(1)

Tensions escalated between Ukraine and Poland following an incident where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky named a military unit after the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), a group accused of atrocities against Poles during World War II. This action prompted a significant diplomatic response from the Polish government. In response to the naming controversy, Polish far-right President Karol Nawrockis revoked the Order of the White Eagle, Poland’s highest state honor, from President Zelensky.

This decision was made despite mediation efforts from Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, signaling a notable diplomatic rift. Commentary on the dispute came from R. Sikorski, who stated that the Ukrainian leader had been “personally humiliated” by the action.

Speaking to TVN24, Sikorski offered a pointed assessment of the diplomatic maneuvering. He suggested that if he were advising the Polish head of state, he would recommend a reciprocal gesture. Specifically, Sikorski proposed that Poland name the Jasionka airport after victims of the UPA, asserting that such a move would prompt a similar counter-action from the Ukrainian side.

The exchange highlights ongoing sensitivities within Polish-Ukrainian relations. The removal of the prestigious award by the Polish administration underscores the depth of the disagreement over historical memory and national symbolism within the context of modern geopolitical alignment between the two nations.
