The 800th kidney transplant was performed at Kauno klinikos

Prof. Inga Arūnė Bumblytė, Head of the Nephrology Clinic at Kauno klinikas, highlighted the significance of reaching the 800th kidney transplant. She stated that this milestone represents 26 years of accumulated expertise, continuous advancements in medical science, and the sustained trust placed in the institution by its patients.

The clinic’s dedication to complex care is exemplified by the journey of a patient named Raimundas. His health challenges originated during his youth while playing professional football. Raimundas developed hypertension, a condition that necessitated daily management with five different classes of antihypertensive drugs.

As his athletic career concluded, he was ultimately diagnosed with kidney failure. Over several years, his kidney function steadily deteriorated, reaching a critical level in 2025. Due to the progression to end-stage kidney failure, Raimundas commenced hemodialysis treatments at Kauno klinikas.

In addition to receiving care, he was also included on the registry for potential kidney donation. This case underscores the comprehensive level of care provided by the facility, managing everything from chronic hypertension to the critical needs associated with kidney failure and the potential for a life-saving transplant. The work at Kauno klinikas continues to demonstrate commitment to advanced nephrology care.
