Alarminga warning: heat waves in Europe are just a “general rehearsal”

Record high temperatures were reported in Szechenyi, northern Hungary, near the Slovakian border, according to a video shared by the national weather service, HungaroMet. During a general rehearsal for the World Health Organization’s (WHO) European region, officials indicated that the current heat wave in Europe is merely a “general rehearsal,” suggesting that future conditions are expected to worsen. Hans Kluge, speaking at the event, predicted that the coming summers will present greater challenges.

He warned that Europe is warming at a rate exceeding twice the global average, characterizing heat waves not as isolated incidents, but as recurring crises. Kluge stated, “Each wave of heat is a new crisis, and they become more frequent, stronger and last longer.”

The WHO’s general assessment highlighted the escalating nature of climatic instability. While the current extreme heat is viewed as a precursor, the pattern suggests a trend toward more intense and sustained weather events.

The predictions emphasize that the current period of high heat is indicative of a broader, worsening climate pattern that necessitates increased preparedness for future heat episodes.
