The temporary Minister of Health, Marija Jakubauskienė, recently approved legislative amendments designed to enhance the structure of care within community-based teams (GBK). These changes specifically target improving the accessibility of support for individuals managing severe and complex mental and behavioral disorders. According to the Ministry, the primary objectives of these amendments are to establish a clearer organizational framework for services, introduce greater operational flexibility, and foster smoother collaboration between inpatient and community health care providers.
Once the expanded service model is fully implemented across the nation, the community-based teams will have the capacity to provide intensive support to an estimated 2,700 individuals concurrently. The reform effort addresses a broader public health challenge. The Ministry noted that the scope of mental health issues in Lithuania is significant, with approximately 100,000 people identified as having related conditions.
Furthermore, the Ministry highlighted concerns regarding current usage patterns, noting the high consumption of alcohol and sedatives within the population. These legislative improvements aim to bolster the continuum of care, ensuring that the community level of support can effectively manage the growing need for specialized mental health services.
