The Syrian Interim Parliament began its work

Following the overthrow of the long-serving ruler Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, new Syrian authorities have dismantled the country’s former parliament. In its place, the government adopted a temporary constitutional declaration intended to govern the nation during a five-year transitional period. The process of reconstituting the legislative body has involved multiple stages.

Last October, the process for selecting members of the new parliament commenced. Local committees, which were established by the election commission—an entity appointed by President Ahmed al-Sharaa—began the collection of two-thirds of the 210 planned parliament seats. Subsequently, President al-Sharaa appointed the remaining 70 members last week, finalizing the structure of the provisional legislative body.

Separately, the country has experienced recent security incidents. During the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to Syria, explosions were reported near his hotel in downtown Damascus. These incidents resulted in at least 18 people sustaining injuries.

These developments underscore a period of significant political and security flux within the Syrian Arab Republic. The establishment of the temporary constitutional framework aims to guide the nation through a period of transition following the dissolution of previous governing structures.
