On Saturday night, officers from the Pagėgiai Border Guard District at the Šiauliai Border Post observed two young foreign nationals on the A12 highway, which connects Riga and Sadkūnai in the Joniškis district, near the village of Satkūnai. The border control personnel initiated a stop to conduct an inspection of the individuals. When questioned about their destination and asked to present identification, the two individuals stated they were from Egypt.
They claimed that a man located in Riga had brought them to Lithuania and subsequently released them on the roadway. Notably, the pair were unable to produce any official travel documentation. To corroborate their claims, one of the men displayed photographs of identification credentials from the Latvian Foreigners Registration Center (LURC) on his mobile phone.
The second individual presented photographs of two separate passports belonging to Egyptian citizens: one for a 19-year-old and another for a 20-year-old. The interaction took place near a significant border crossing point. The officers maintained their inspection procedures, gathering details regarding the origin and intended travel plans of them.
The lack of physical documentation prompted further investigation by the border authorities. The incident highlights routine border security checks conducted by Lithuanian officials to ensure compliance with international travel regulations as people move through the region connecting to Riga.
