The German general warned Europe: without the US, it would not be possible to defend against Putin(1)

According to Lt. Gen. H.

Neumann, if the operational readiness of the Air Force or NATO Air Force is required immediately, the purchase of commercially available systems may be a necessary option. These comments were made during discussions involving the European Union, which is actively seeking to redirect defense expenditures toward European manufacturers. The overarching goal is to diminish reliance on key defense suppliers, particularly those based in the United States.

However, Neumann cautioned that while the development of European industrial capacity is a long-term undertaking, current military requirements are immediate and pressing. During the NATO summit, the discussion also touched upon the strategic support afforded to Ukraine by the United States. Neumann referenced the progress made by Lithuania, emphasizing that developing indigenous capabilities requires considerable time, which is currently scarce.

While acknowledging the robust capabilities within the European industry, Neumann assessed that the region has not yet achieved the same level of advanced technological development seen in the US defense sector. The current situation highlights a significant gap between strategic long-term planning and the urgent operational needs of modern military forces. The necessity of rapid deployment capability makes the immediate procurement of existing systems a potential, though perhaps less desired, solution for the allied air forces.
